Air Brake System PartsThree systems in one

Air brakes are really three systems sharing parts: the service brake (normal pedal braking), the parking brake, and the emergency brake (kicks in if the system fails).

Dual Air Brake SystemsTwo independent systems, one set of controls

Most heavy vehicles run a dual air system — a "primary" circuit (usually rear brakes) and a "secondary" circuit (usually front), each with its own tanks and lines, both driven by the same pedal.

Inspecting Air Brake SystemsWhat to add to your normal 7-step inspection

Final Air Brake Checks Governor cut-in/out: compressor should start ~100 psi, stop ~125 psi. Air loss rate: engine off, parking brake released — loss under 2 psi/min (single vehicle) or 3 psi/min (combination). Static brake test: hold the foot brake one minute — loss under 3 psi (single) or 4 psi (combination). Low-pressure warning: must trigger before 55 psi. Spring brakes: should pop on automatically at 20–45 psi. Buildup rate: 85→100 psi within 45 seconds (dual systems, engine at operating rpm).
